FAQs of Cozumel Diving

Diving in Cozumel is a dream for many, offering crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and incredible marine life, but it’s natural to have questions before embarking on your underwater adventure. To help you prepare, we’ve created a comprehensive FAQ section addressing everything from the best time to dive and gear recommendations to safety tips and local regulations. Whether you’re a beginner curious about certifications or a seasoned diver planning a private charter, our FAQs aim to provide clear, helpful answers to make your Cozumel diving experience seamless and unforgettable.

  • Our Cozumel dive boat “Cha-Kay” is located at Marina Fonatur. Our shop operates online for all booking and enquiries. The morning boat leaves the Marina at 9am and you will need to arrive by 8:45am to board. Afternoon boats leave at 2:00 pm. Your gear will be set up and ready for you on the boat.

  • The water temperature in Cozumel ranges from low of 26c / 78f in the winter months (Dec, Jan, Feb), 28c / 82f in spring (Mar, Apr, May) to 30c / 86f in the late summer.

  • This depends on you own tolerance level. In the winter months the water ranges from 80-82 and a 3mm is suggested. During summer the water can be 84-86 and many divers are fine with just a light shirt.

  • We depart at 9am daily and 2pm for the afternoon trips. Divers must arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled departure to board the boat and prepare their gear.

  • The average tip is $12-15 USD per tank. If you do a 2-tank dive the appropriate tip would be approximately $30 USD and the crew will appreciate this very much.

  • Yes we will take divers coming from the cruise ships. It is your responsibility to confirm your arrival time as Cozumel time may be different from ship time. To make the 9am trip your cruise must arrive by 8am Cozumel time. Please review our cruise ship diving guide for more information.

  • No, diver operators in Cozumel are not permitted to pickup at the cruise terminals. You will need to take a short taxi ride to us at Marina Fonatur.

  • Yes, you will need to take the 7:30am ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. Once in Cozumel take a taxi to us at Cozumel Marina Fonatur. Here is our Ultimate Guide on How to Dive Cozumel from the Mainland. We ask you to message us when you are on the ferry.

  • Yes we do night dives on request. There is a minimum of 3 certified divers to do a night dive from the boat. We can also do a guided shore night dive if minimums are not met.

  • Yes, we encourage you to bring and dive with your own equipment. If diving multiple days we will clean and store your gear for you. Blue Note Scuba has full Valet Dive Service.

  • Yes we have top of the line well maintained scuba equipment available for rent. You can rent by the piece or a full set. Please let us know your height, weight and fin size when booking.

  • Our boat Cha-Kay is the best dive boat around. We can take 12 divers plus 2 guides on the boat. Our typical ratio is up to 6 divers per guide.

  • At Blue Note Scuba we allow you to dive until your air is 700psi, low NDL or weather permitting. We want you to enjoy your dives as much as we do. Let’s Go Dive Cozumel!

  • Our boat Cha-Kay is the fastest in Cozumel, powered by twin 300hp outboard motors. It takes approximately 15 minutes from the marina to Cozumel’s most popular dive sites.

  • We choose the dive sites each day by diver request and weather conditions. If you are diving multiple days and have specific requests please let our dive guides know. They will do their best to accommodate as much as possible.

  • Cozumel diving is world class. You can expect to see Turtles, Rays, Eagle Rays, Nurse Sharks, Reef Sharks, Eels a large variety of colorful Reef Fish and amazing coral structures. Specific animals are not guaranteed on every dive but our guides will do their best to show you Cozumel’s best.

  • Yes, if you are diving alone we can buddy you up with another single diver or dive alongside our dive guide.

  • Yes, eANX Nitrox is available in 32% or 36% for an additional charge. This must be ordered at least 24 hours in advance.

  • Yes we have the Enriched Air Nitrox Diver course available in as little as 1 day. If you are diving 3 or more days Blue Note offers this course for free with the purchase of PADI eLearning.

  • Yes we call this Discover Scuba Diving. There are 2 options: 1. if this is your first ever dive experience we offer a shore Discover Dive. 2. if you have done diving before and are comfortable in the water we can do 2 Discover Scuba dives from our afternoon boat.

  • Yes we offer refresher dives with one of our instructors. The dive begins with skill and safety practice plus buoyancy review before starting the dives.

  • We strongly encourage all divers to have dive insurance from either DAN (Divers Alert Network) or Dive Assure. When booking please let us know your dive insurance member number.

  • We are a partner with CMC Costa Med Hospital and it is the only DAN Certified Hyperbaric Chamber facility in Cozumel.

  • You will need to book in advance as space is limited and can fill up fast. Bookings can be made as little as 24 hours in advance if space allows.

  • Yes, as space is limited a deposit is required for the first day of diving. The deposit is paid by credit card when booking.

  • You can pay your balance online using the credit card on file or in USD cash or pesos at the beginning of each dive day. You can also pay with PayPal or Venmo with a 5% fee.

  • As long as the boat is not full they are welcome to join and snorkel in Cozumel for $75. Snorkel gear is provided as well as all other amenities on the boat. A boat rider without snorkeling is $60.

  • Only if your hotel has a pier in the South zone. In Cozumel dive operators are not permitted to pick up divers by land. Taxi or rental vehicles are required.

  • We can pickup at the hotel piers inside the Cozumel Marine Park zone. Some of these include eLCid, Grand Park Royal, Presidente, Sunscape, Dreams, Secrets, Landmark, Fiesta Americana, Explorean, Alegro, Occidental, Iberostar. Most hotels have a required pier use fee that you will need to pay directly with them.

  • The Marine Park Fee in Cozumel is required for all divers each day. The current amount is $12US / 220 pesos each diver per day and must be paid cash at the boat. Please have this available when boarding.
